Why We Ranch

We believe that consumers should have a good understanding of the relationship between the food they eat and how it was produced. We raise flavorful, healthy food for health conscious consumers by creating and maintaining a healthy environment for the animals from which it comes.

There are many benefits to maintaining this environment and eating the foods that come from it. Follow the links to the right to find out more about them.

Rare Breeds

In addition to raising healthy food, part of our mission is to help preserve rare or heritage breeds.

Domestic North American pigs originated from wild stocks still found in European, Asian, and North African forests.Pigs are not native to North America but were brought to the New World on Christopher Columbus' second voyage in 1493.

The heritage breed we raise is the Tamworth. The Tamworth is considered the best bacon hog in the United States and boasts one of the leanest carcasses of all the pork breeds. The ham is muscular and firm. The first Tamworths were brought to the United States in 1882 by Thomas Bennett of Rossville, Illinois. There remain fewer than 1,000 registrations of Tamworths in the United States.

Our pork's great taste comes thanks partly to its breed and partly to the way in which the pigs are raised: as nature intended. Our pigs are predisposed to graze and live outdoors and we work hard to give them the environment they desire.
